Assessment and Metrics

First know what you need to know

The most common mistake in measurement is to collect data before knowing what purpose it is to serve. The consequence, at best, is a lot wasted time.  At worst, the measurement process causes people to focus on the wrong thing and diverts attention from the root problem.

My thought process regarding metrics

Whenever I am asked to design a measurement or assessment strategy, I always consider the following issues:

  • What decision requires data that can't be made without it?
  • Who will make that decision?
  • What questions need to be answered to make a wise decision?
  • What balance of quantitative and qualitative data will provide the best perspective?
  • How do I ensure stakeholders understand the context of the numbers as well as the numbers themselves?
