Example: Skeletons Out of the Closet

Client: Oil and Gas Technology Provider

Business Problem

The firm had doubled in size each of the past three years but the executive team was still managing the way it always had. Personality and interpersonal issues that were tolerated in the past were now causing problems with employees and customers.  Inefficient design and production, missed deadlines and poor quality was the result.

Solution

I used a "top-down" coaching strategy to identify and resolve communication issues. I worked first with the CEO to understand his vision and his point of view on the roots of their problem, and to help him identify some alternative leadership practices. Then, I did the same with his direct reports.  Once each individual had clarity on his/her role in the problems the team faced, they were able to address these issues as a group.

Results

  • The skeletons are out of the closet. All of the interpersonal issues that people whispered about in the past can now be discussed openly.
  • Team members have a vocabulary and framework with which to discuss both interpersonal and business issues, and they are able to discuss them productively and without hard feelings.
  • Vision, strategy and tactics are mutually understood and well documented so that there is now a sense of joint accountability within the group.
